BGC raises £13,500 for UK good causes

The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) has successfully raised £13,500 as part of its Grand National Bet charity campaign. The campaign has seen 40 UK MPs participating by placing a wager on last Saturday’s Grand National at Aintree.

The total sum of £13,500 would go to the winning MPs’ charity of choice. Labour Shadow DCMS Minister Alex Davies-Jones MP, SNP’s Pete Wishart MP, and Conservative MPs Caroline Nokes MP, Philip Davies MP, and Miles Briggs MSP, emerged as winners by backing Corach Rambler with odds of 8/1, ridden by Derek Fox.

Other MPs who placed each-way bets and won were Mark Pawsey MP, Dr James Davies MP, Mark Tami MP, Dame Caroline Dinenage MP, Nigel Evans MP, and Alex Stafford MP.

The winning MPs have pledged a portion of their earnings to various charities, including Guide Dogs for the Blind, Age UK, and regional food banks. These charitable organisations will receive at least £250, which has been promised by leading high-street bookmakers such as William Hill, Ladbrokes, Coral, Paddy Power, and Betfred.

Michael Dugher, the BGC’s Chief Executive, said: “I want to pay tribute to all the thousands of people who work in betting shops to help support hard-pressed high streets and local economies, it was great to see MPs from across the political divide – more MPs than ever before – visiting bookies across the country supporting more good causes than ever before.”

The BGC continued to highlight the success of the Grand National, which was followed on TV by a UK audience of 7.5 million, with circa 13 million people placing wagers and an estimated 600 million watching around the world.
