The 2025 report highlights a standout year for responsible gambling initiatives across the continent which reflects an industry-wide shift toward player protection and sustainability.
One of the most eye-catching statistics is that 65% of online customers used at least one safer gambling tool in 2024. These tools, which include features like deposit limits and reality checks, are becoming a core part of the digital gaming experience.
Supporting this shift in behaviour was an impressive volume of communication from operators. Over 67 million messages were sent out to players, all focused on encouraging safe gambling habits and keeping sessions within healthy boundaries. It’s clear that responsible play is becoming less of an afterthought and more of an industry standard.
EGBA Secretary General Maarten Haijer noted, “The increasing use of safer gambling tools is a very positive development and shows that our members are serious about embedding responsibility into the player experience.”
A big contributor to this success was the fourth edition of European Safer Gambling Week, which reached a record 26 countries and involved nearly 200 organisations. The campaign engaged around 3 million people through targeted messaging and other content.
The association also took steps to make gambling advertising more accountable. A second round of monitoring for the pan-European code of responsible advertising placed a particular focus on the protection of minors. This ongoing initiative aims to keep marketing practices transparent and age-appropriate, especially in the ever-expanding online gambling space.
The momentum doesn’t seem to be slowing. The EGBA has also been active in other key areas like anti-money laundering (AML). In 2024, the association ran several workshops to help operators stay ahead of the European Union’s new AML regulations. The idea is to not only comply with rules but to create a culture of long-term resilience and integrity.
With an expanding member base and a growing footprint across Europe, the EGBA’s role continues to grow. In 2024, 321 licenses were held by EGBA members across 21 countries, and the association welcomed new members from across the gaming and tech world.
While growth is important, this year’s report shows that for many operators, responsibility is finally taking centre stage. As Haijer put it, “We’re proud to see the industry continuing to make real progress. It’s not just about growth, it’s about doing things the right way.”
