Gambling revenue in the UK has continued to grow at impressive rates. The gross gambling yield, or GGY, increased 21% year-on-year during the fourth quarter of 2024 to £1.54 billion.

The Great Britain Gambling Commission has released data which covers the quarter up to 31 December 2024 and showed that the figure was much greater than Q4 of 2023 and around 16.7% ahead of £1.32 billion in the third quarter of last year.

The data also reveals that the overall bets and spins have increased by 8% to a record 25.9 billion, as slots continue to dominate in the UK. GGY for online slots alone is £709 million in Q4. The Gambling Commission noted that one operator re-classified some of its products into the slot vertical, which may have impacted figures and made the previous year’s an indirect comparison. Session length was also higher than last year, meaning people are spending longer on average playing slot games.

Real event betting grew fastest, jumping an impressive 38% and accounting for £647 million of gambling yield. This amount grew, though the number of bets on events fell by 7%, and average monthly active accounts were actually 3% lower year-on-year.

Virtual betting GGY actually saw a drop of 14% to £9.5 million, and esports betting GGY was down by 12% to a relatively small £3.7 million as fewer people seem to be betting on esports tournaments, and coverage may also be dropping.

The Gambling Commission’s report also revealed some information about land-based providers and found that the yield of these casinos actually increased by 5% to £592 million. £279.7 million of this total came from gaming machines, £159.8 million from over-the-counter activity and £152.6 million from self-service betting terminals, which are regularly installed at events like the darts at Alexandra Palace.

Figures from Q1 of 2025 are expected in due course.
